I Just Can’t Win Today!

When my mom signed me up for a tennis match, I freaked and not in a good way. I ran upstairs and hid under my covers, thinking if she can’t find me, she can’t take me, but I was wrong.

Feeling the soft blanket underneath, made me feel a little better, but not too much. “Vrinda” called my mom, I stammered and didn’t respond. She called me again but this time she said “Vrinda Panjwani you get down here this second!!” I panicked and when your parents call you by your first and last name, oh good lord they mean trouble! “Coming!” I yelled. Your tennis match starts soon, mom said. Ya I know, I whispered. I peeked out of my room, my mom raised one eyebrow and walked towards the kitchen. I figured I was toast like burnt black, not edible, toast!

I am ready, I said while walking down the twisted stairs that looked like an upside-down staircase! “My gorgeous” mom said. I said to Mom “You know that it’s not a fashion show, right?” “Yes” mom started, but if it was then you would win!” “ugh mom!!” I said in a very sarcastic way. She looked at me with the “Are you sure about that” kind of face. I squirmed and left to grab my bag. I thought to myself “Where did I end up such an over loving mom”.

As we left my house the way to the tennis court wasn’t long, but the way my head felt while getting there well was super long. When we got to the court there seems to be over thousands of people sitting on the benches, it was like attending my brother’s Lil kickers soccer game, but way worse! I took a big long gaze at my opponent, she as big as the character in the 1900’s movie I watched last week, and here’s a fun fact the character was super tall! You could probably infer that she was older than me and of course, she was! I was still gazing at her, my eyes looked like my pet fish’s eyes and if you don’t know already…Fish, don’t blink!!! The loud siren went off, it sounded like a mamma whale bellowing for her child! At least that woke me up. But the bad news is that the siren means it’s time to play.

My mom gave me a big pat on my back and whispered, “Good luck”. I smiled and left, I felt a rush of confidence flow down my veins, it was like the pat on the back was confidence! I took a deep breath while my face was still sweating and not because of the sun! We started to play and the balls that she hit went left-right, left, and right. She had so much power, I couldn’t even catch up! But that’s when that rush of confidence did its magic! And you couldn’t even imagine what happened next!!

As we got further into the game, I could see myself winning, now all I had to do was make it a reality! There were six sets in a full match and she already won two full sets in a row. All I had to do was win four of them which I thought was impossible, but then in my mind, I saw my mom whispering, “It’s not impossible just challenging”. It echoed in my head and soon enough I knew what it meant! We started to play and this time it was me hitting the powerful shots and if I don’t say so myself my serves weren’t as bad as I thought they would be, oh who am I kidding they were awesome! After two games we were tied up, and guess what when we played the fifth one, I won it too! And to my surprise, I won the last set too! And ended up winning the whole match!! Yay!! I was so happy I almost cried, there were tears in my eyes! Oh wait, that was just sweat. But the point is my mom was right, sometimes things might seem impossible, but they are just challenging.
